Famous Couples Book Jacket
The Job
While maintaining the specifications of a traditional Penguin Book, I was asked to create a book jacket design for their “Famous Couples” series. The front cover metaphorically conceptualizes the couples relationship through the use of inanimate objects and shapes and the back cover includes a summarized paragraph with just enough information to engage readers.
Design Statement
I chose Tim Burton’s fictional character’s Edward Scissorhands and Kim Boggs. I wanted to create a design that highlighted the couple’s genuine love while noting their obvious physical differences. The overall theme is meant to set a gothic yet innocent tone that correlates with both the film and the couple’s relationship.
My Process
I started by rewatching the film and taking down notes of their individual characteristics, shared similarities and key differences. From here I began to lay out rough sketches while focusing on the key details that make their relationship unique. I landed on the fact that Edward was artificially created by an inventor yet fully capable of accepting Kim’s love.
The final design is a heart made out of mechanical gears that reflect Edward’s anatomy and Kim’s delicate personality. Together, the design conveys the solid and unconditional relationship between the two.
